Doctor Who is not about to swap out Peter Capaldi for Matt Smith – and here’s why

In case we haven’t already made this clear: no, Matt Smith is not returning to Doctor Who.

It’s a slow year for Who news, what with our TARDIS travels having been put on hold until Christmas, so it’s easy to see how a rumour could snowball.

But now a few (old) quotes republished by a tabloid have led to further reports that Smith’s digging out his old bow tie from the back of the BBC Wales costume department.

Doctor Who is apparently going to stage its first “degeneration”, with Peter Capaldi on his way out.

Well… Poppycock.

First off, let’s consider the source of the rumours. Much of this hullaballoo is based on a single comment from Smith, which even the original report admits is a year old.

“They will ask me back one day, won’t they?”

It’s a pretty fuzzy statement to begin with – and surely the most sensible reading is that Smith is simply anticipating a future guest appearance on Doctor Who, akin to David Tennant’s own in 2013’s 50th anniversary episode.

Because while many were quick to claim that Smith would be the first Doctor to return to the series, that’s nonsense – it’s a tradition that goes all the way back to 1973, when Jon Pertwee was joined on screen by his two predecessors.

The second piece of “evidence” for Smith retaking the TARDIS is a quote attributed to Doctor Who‘s showrunner Steven Moffat.
