You all know by now that Peter Capaldi will be popping up in the opening double-header of Doctor Who spinoff Class – but don’t expect him to stick around.

As well as the show not having too many other cameos from the Whoniverse, writer Patrick Ness has now said that The Doctor won’t be there to save the day.

“For me, it’s really important that the show stands on its own, because otherwise it feels like a cheat and it feels like you’re leaning on a crutch and you’re not confident on your own,” he said at a Q&A.

“Our aim was to really make the show confident in itself and what it could do, and get you excited for what it had to offer – which is the right challenge, I think.

Ness had previously compared cameos to… well… an unexpected appearance of a Sonic Screwdriver, if you will.

“I think cameo appearances are like penises,” he said at New York Comic-Con.

“If you put it in the scene, it’s all people are going to look at. So you have to have it there for a really, really good reason… I don’t want anything to take away from the story.”

Actor Con O’Neill has promised that Class will be “cool” and “sexy” and really out there”.

After tucking into the first two episodes this weekend, you can watch the third together with the cast and Patrick Ness at MCM London Comic-con.

That episode will be called ‘Nightvisiting’ and is focused on a shapeshifting alien who can morph into the dead.
